we are , the very first tool that is often projected in any environment we are thrust into is the powerful tool of language . From the moment we were born , our parents are already looking forward to the day we pronounce our first word to the world . That first word is often remembered like an unforgettable classic movie , celebrated with smiles and awe by our loved ones when finally uttered — a significant milestone in the life of a growing child

Language is one of the gateways to know a person . It can be one ‘s potent tool or sophisticated mask to get by in a society pulsating with challenges . The language barrier has never been more of an issue than in the case of the English language among immigrants . Many stories have been written about immigrants coming to America with a tall of having to learn English to have a decent conversation with its English-speaking citizens . This has resulted in the emergence of different Englishes (Tan 107 ) proliferating in American society

One of Amy Tan ‘s distinctive points in her essay shows the reality that as an immigrant herself there is what is termed as a language of intimacy , a different sort of English that relates to family talk , the language I grew up with (Tan 107 She describes this kind of English that she grew up with as fractured , broken , limited (Tan 108 . This is even more significant when she details her mother ‘s type of English

Growing up , Amy has struggled with what she earlier perceived as the shameful English of her mother . I was ashamed of her English . I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say (Tan 108 . This is a typical feeling of an outsider trying to fit into a society , trying to make her own first important impression . Later generation of immigrants are more educated than their parents thus the language barrier alone creates the typical generational gap . Amy ‘s case with her mother was no different

She was quick to illustrate scenarios where she had to act , sometimes almost reluctantly , as the bridge to convey what her mother wants to the English speaking world such as the episodes of the stockbroker ‘s failure to send her mother ‘s check on time and the important hospital scene

Amy almost blamed the influence of her mother ‘s English to her average English test results during achievement tests , I .Q . tests… [banner_entry_footer]
