1 . It has been said that the age of exploration or the age of discovery is one of the most important facets of European history . This is because this particular era practically changed the course of commerce and ultimately the way of life for the West . According to Wikipedia , the Age of Discovery or Age of Exploration was a period from the early 15th century and continuing into the early 17th century , during which European ships traveled around the world to search for new trading routes and [banner_entry_middle]

partners to feed burgeoning capitalism in Europe . This particular period was rooted in new technologies and ideas growing out of the Renaissance which include advances in cartography , navigation firepower and shipbuilding . Many people wanted to find a route to Asia through the west of Europe . The most important development was the invention of the first carrack and then caravel in Iberia . These vessels evolved from medieval European designs with a fruitful combination of Mediterranean and North Sea innovations and the addition of some Arabic elements . They were the first ships that could leave the relatively passive Mediterranean and sail safely on the open Atlantic

2 . The effect of the Age of Exploration was unprecedented . For millennia it had been the Mediterranean economy that had been the continent ‘s most vibrant regions like Italy and Greece . It had thus been the wealthiest and most potent . The newly dominant Atlantic economy was controlled by the states of Western Europe , initially boosting Portugal and Spain , and then France , Netherlands , Britain , and Germany , where Europe ‘s traditional economic axis , through to where Northern Italy is , extending from southern England until the present

3 . Without a doubt , one of the most powerful tools in trying to gain political and economic power is to use religion and ideology . One need not actually look far to see evidence of this notion . Right now , we are bombarded with news of Muslim fanatics trying to gain economic foothold by launching jihad against the Western civilization . These fanatics are using ideology and religion to further their selfish motives of world domination . Since people are naturally vulnerable when it comes to their religious belief , it becomes easy for them to believe the causes being advanced by their so-called leaders


The 18th century has been dubbed as the age of enlightenment mainly because it was both a culmination and a new beginning . Fresh currents of thought were wearing down institutionalized traditions . New ideas and new approaches to old institutions were setting the stage for great revolutions to come . It was an age of reason based on faith , not an age of faith based on reason . The enlightenment spiritualized the principle of religious authority , humanized theological systems , and emancipated individuals from physical coercion
