How Type Is Generated

The technical method for producing machine casting

The type casting process is a detail oriented trade that has been artfully mastered through many decades of evolution . Up until the 1960 ‘s , the predominant technology was the hot-metal method . This used lead that was poured at the site , in the form of the individual characters of the alphabet , or lines of type . These were forged into matrices , or mats , and used for printing or in preparation of quality repro proofs . At the close of each application , the printer re-melted [banner_entry_middle]

The typesetting shop of years ago was known by its noise , its machine grease and emanating toxic fumes . Typographers in this early era were highly skilled workers that were mastering their blue collar profession and compensated very well for their efforts . The Linotype , Intertype and Ludlow , which lines of type known as slugs , and Monotype , which cast individual pieces of type , were the leading type setting machines of their day

The days of hot-metal technology produced many typesetting terms that are still in use today . Leading is the spaces between the typeset lines and is aptly named because originally the spacing was created by placing lead between the cast lines

The basic type casting process begins by conveying the inner zones of the letter , otherwise known as counter , with engraving tools . A typesetter would affix these onto the end of a steel bar , rectangular in shape . This is made hard through tempering . This counterpunch is used to strike bars to produce the punch . When the inner spaces of the letters are on the punch , the rest of the subtle features are perfected with various engraving implements . One verifies the engraving processes progress using smoke proofs which are made by carbon deposits on the punch via a candle flame

The next process is the striking of a blank die comprised of a less rigid metal . The punch is often used to strike an ore like bronze to create a matrix . A matrix is negative letter mould

A matrix , punch and counterpunch are made up for every letter in the alphabet used for the intended printing purpose

The matrix is eased into the bottom of the hand mould . This is clamped tightly shut in preparation of molten metal comprised of mostly lead and tin , to be poured into the top cavity

Next , is the extraction of the tang and the sort . After the type metal has cooled off , the mould is opened and the four centimeter long , cast rectangular block is removed

For the characters to make type height , the tang is removed and melted Various sorts are then assembled into phrases in a composing stick and bound together , making a forme . An even printable surface of type is then created where all the symbols and letters are exactly the same height . The basis of letterpress printing is formed by the forme being mounted on a press and inked with an impression then being made on (Researched… [banner_entry_footer]
