The Jewish Passover What is Passover It is the Jewish celebration of their freedom from Egyptian bondage

It marks the birth of the Jewish nation

The History of Passover The actual Passover happened approximately 3 ,500 years ago

Jews of long ago are called Hebrews or Israelites

During those days , the Hebrews from Canaan have famine in their lands Jacob , a Hebrew patriarch , traveled with his extended family to Egypt to have a better life and escape hunger

Eventually , his son Joseph , became the Viceroy of Egypt

in the land of Egypt for the next 400 years . Their number grew to millions

A Pharaoh of Egypt became nervous of their big number and that they might side with the enemies in time of war

The Pharaoh then directed the Hebrews to be slaves and build cities and roads for him

The Pharaoh also decreed to kill all newborn Hebrew males Moses , as a baby , was placed in a basket and left floating in the Nile River to escape the massacre . He would later on lead the Hebrews out of slavery

He was found by the Pharaoh ‘s daughter and was raised by her

When Moses was 80 years of age , God spoke to him telling him of the task to lead the Hebrews to freedom , together with his brother Aaron

It was in 1476 BC that he successfully led all Hebrews out of Egypt by passing through the parted river The successful feat started the Jewish celebration of Passover Passover Rituals and Practices Passover is commemorated through a dinner celebration called the Seder

A Passover Seder is a meal served with special food , practices , and Scripture readings .Each family is going to recount their own account of the great Passover story

The meal itself is going to be an experience of going from slavery to liberty using the food as tool Jewish Common Rituals and Practices The Jews recites the Shema , or their profession of faith in their morning and evening services

The Jews observe Shabbat . They rest , worship , and do fasting from sunset of Friday up to sunset on Sunday

The Jews follow a certain dietary code in line with their religious beliefs
