I feel honored and deeply moved that you should give this important prize to a simple person . I accept the prize with profound gratitude on behalf of the oppressed everywhere and for all those who struggle for freedom and work for world peace . Scientists tell us that the world of nature is so small and interdependent that a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon rainforest can generate a violent storm on the other side of the earth This principle is known as the Butterfly Effect ‘ Today , we realize perhaps more than ever , that the world of human activity also has its own Butterfly Effect ‘ – for better or for worse

I joined the United Nations system in 1962 as an administrative and budget officer with the World Health Organization (WHO ) in Geneva . As Secretary-General , I have always given priority to revitalizing the United Nations through a comprehensive programme of reform strengthening the Organization ‘s traditional work in the areas of development and the maintenance of international peace and security advocating human rights , the rule of law and the universal values of equality , tolerance and human dignity restoring public confidence in the Organization by reaching out to new partners and , in his words , by bringing the United Nations closer to the people . I have also taken a leading role in mobilizing the international community in the battle against HIV /AIDS , and more recently against the global terrorist threat

As Secretary-General , my first major initiative was the plan for reform Renewing the United Nations , which was presented to the Member States in July 1997 and has been pursued ever since with an emphasis on improving coherence and coordination . My April 1998 report to the Security Council on The Causes of Conflict and the Promotion of Durable Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa ‘ was among several efforts to maintain the international community ‘s commitment to Africa the most disadvantaged of the world ‘s regions

No matter what part of the world we come from , we are all basically the same human beings . We all seek happiness and try to avoid suffering . We have the same basic human needs and is concerns . All of us human beings want freedom and the right to determine our own destiny as individuals and as peoples . That is human nature . Throughout my term as Secretary-General , I have sought to place human beings at the centre of everything we do – from conflict prevention to development to human rights .
