Communication is founded on the basis of plurality . That is , there needs to be at least two people for a communication to occur . The most simple communication model consists of a sender who encodes a message and passes it through a certain medium of transference , and a receiver who decodes the message . the recipient of the message is that person who it was originally intended for , and also that the message is understood in the manner that the sender intended it to be . Problems in communication arise when the two principle objectives of sending a message and expecting it to be understood as per its original intent are not aligned

This issue takes special precedence in a team environment , where it is imperative for all members of the team to be aware of their roles and responsibilities in to meet the team objectives . If the objectives of one member of the team are different as compared to other members of the team , then the team cannot meet its overall objectives effectively This may be a result of ineffectual team communication , where the objectives of each team member have not been communicated , or understood accurately by each team member . This may , at times , also lead to a breakdown of the relationships that exist between team members

For the purposes of communication , a team may be defined as an interdependent , interactive organism that has a common goal and for which its whole is more than the sum of its parts – that is , the team generates positive synergy through coordinated effort . Communication is one of the cornerstones of effective team synergy


The benefits that accrue to working in teams in relation to effective team communication include the following

Effective communication while working in teams allows for the teams to be performance driven , and for team members to understand their relevance to the team meeting its objectives . Thus , the team becomes goal-driven which has great relevance in terms of meeting performance objectives from a professional perspective , and meeting personal goals from an incentives perspective

A team spirit ensues where each member of the team ensures that the team is following its path . Thus , in place of internal competition team members are working productively as a whole , increasing the size of the performance pie , instead of competing for personal shares

At an enterprise level , effective level that leads to strong teams being formed works to the advantage of the company as a whole . It now has a reputation of having a team-oriented culture , backed by a strong and motivated workforce . This bodes well for the company which can then leverage this advantage in terms of encouraging talented people to apply for careers within the organization
